TISSUETech
FAB’s major achievement in the tissue engineering sector has been the creation of the TISSUETech Service, launched in 1996.
TISSUETech is equipped to provide any hospital in Italy or the rest of Europe with autologous human skin, laboratory-made from tiny fragments taken by biopsy from the patients themselves. As a result, there is no risk of rejection or viral infection, as each patient receives engineered tissue made with his or her own cells.
From one small skin biopsy it is possible to replicate, in vitro, the two main components of the skin: epidermis and dermis. FAB’s engineered grafts (dermis: Hyalograft 3D; epidermis: Laserskin autograft) are useful in treating chronic ulcers, particularly diabetic foot and vascular ulcers, as well as burns.
The natural biomaterials made of hyaluronic acid used for its autologous cell transplants place FAB at the forefront of the tissue engineering field.
TISSUETech has recently expanded its activities to the orthopaedics sector and now makes grafts with autologous chondrocytes to treat joint cartilage lesions in the knee and ankle (Hyalograft C). Again, FAB is unrivalled worldwide because the cells are grown on a biomaterial that is easier for the surgeon to apply and helps the graft to take rapidly.
